Genesis 32:4 – 36:43; Haftarah: Obadiah 1:1 – 1:21

This week we go deeper into the mystery of Jacob and his Angels. Our parasha finds Jacob immediately after he sees God’s Angels split into two camps whereupon we find him sending Angels to his brother Esau (in your English versions it might say “messengers”, but the Hebrew has Angels here…). This parasha deals directly with the questions of the “divinity” of Jacob with breathtaking depth and connects us in a very real way to the humanity of Christ (and His divinity). Along the way we meet Esau, who plays a role (sometime open and sometimes hidden…) throughout the entire parasha – a role that we will seek to uncover – as well as a “God-man” who fights against Jacob. We will study the revolting story (on all sides…) of the rape of Dinah and the deaths of Deborah – Rebecca’s nurse – as well as Rachel in the context of our reading of this parasha. Finally, if we have time, we will also study Esau’s genealogy that goes far and wide…
