Genesis 28:10 – 32:3; Haftarah: Hosea 11:7 – 14:10
This parasha stands between last week’s parasha which introduced us to the temporal as well as the eternal relationship between Jacob and Esau and next week’s parasha where a reconciliation between the brothers will be found (it too with significant Christological implications). In this week’s parasha therefore, we follow Jacob as he departs from the Promised land, through a vision of the ladder and its angels at “Beth-El”, to his dealings with Laban, his marriage with his two daughters and the birth of eleven out of the twelve tribes. We will continue to trace the Seed in the “genesis” of the tribes and understand the meaning of the names and circumstances of their birth. Finally, we study the Exodus (quite literally) of Jacob and his family from Laban and his arrival at Mahanaim: the two camps (of angels).
